Do no harm and take no shit.

Just been thinking about some stuff I’ve seen online recently and thought I’d share.

I think it’s important to remind ourselves of the basics regularly. Some times people can mistake the mantra of “do no harm” to mean that they should be a push over. At the same time I’ve noticed a lot of memes and quotes online about not taking shit from people, or about “deserving” this that or the other.

An example – “if you can’t handle me at my worst, you don’t deserve me at my best” – I keep seeing this everywhere, I imagine that it was probably written/said with good intention, but to me it screams spoiled brat. It’s almost like trying to justify being a bitch, no consideration for other people, you may as well just say “I can act however I want and you either tolerate it or you’re the bad guy”.

Yes, we should all be making sure that we do what is best for ourselves, but the arrogance and selfishness these things promote barely leaves any space for compassion, love or understanding.

Perhaps I’m naive but I believe that there can be a middle ground, a compromise. Why can’t we look out for our best interests while also considering others?  I believe that the negativity of quotes like these are not helpful, and that there is a positive alternative.

If we could treat others as we wish to be treated, AND treat ourselves how we would treat others (don’t be a pushover – you need to be kind to yourself as well as others), then all these small acts would add up to a big change in how people in general treat each other.

What do you guys think?
